PROJECT: ANTIQUE KEY FRAME

One of my favorite things to do is see something I like in a store and then go home and make it myself. It’s usually cheaper than buying it and always more fun.

Recently, I was at Restoration Hardware and saw a framed vintage key that I fell in love with. The price tag: $100. Rather than buying it, I snapped a photo with my cell phone instead and set about making it myself.  Here’s how I did it:

SUPPLIES

  • Skeleton Keys
These can be found at most antique stores for around two or three dollars
  • Frames
I got mine at IKEA for $23. They needed to have raised glass to provide room for the keys; those with cardstock interior borders worked best, as they also hid the edges of the fabric and ribbon I used.
  • Muslin
Muslin is inexpensive, natural-colored cotton fabric that you can get at any fabric store. Alternatively, you could use brown craft paper.
  • Matte Modge Podge / Super Glue
Classic craft supplies. You know where to find them.

DIRECTIONS

1. Cut the muslin or paper to cover the opening of the frame.

2. Glue the muslin/paper down with Matte Modge Podge. Don’t worry if you can see streaks — this will make it look more rustic.

3. Lay out your keys and glue them down using the Modge Podge or super glue. If you’re using ribbon to hang your keys, you can attach them to the top of the frame with some tape.

4. Reassemble the frame and hang in a prominent place to show off your work!

RETAIL: $100
PROJECT COST: $30
SAVINGS: $70
